Dublin Airport averages 772.5 mm of rain a year, with rain of 1 mm or more on 137 days (Met Éireann, Dublin Airport 1991–2020 averages). Every square metre of roof sheds a litre for every millimetre, so each 10 m² of roof sends about 7,725 litres a year into its gutter (our calculation). On Dublin Airport's wettest day in the 1991–2020 record, 73.9 mm fell in a single day: 739 litres off the same 10 m².
When a gutter is blocked, sagging or leaking at a joint, that water runs down the wall instead of the downpipe. It soaks the brickwork or render, stains it green, rots the fascia board behind the gutter, and on a bad run gets into the wall and shows as damp inside. It's the least expensive part of a roof to fix and one of the most expensive to ignore.
Rain isn't even across the county. On Met Éireann's grid it runs from about 729 mm a year around Malahide to 1,014 mm around Stepaside, under the Dublin Mountains (Met Éireann 1991–2020 rainfall grid, our 2 km averages).
Prices
We read the price pages of Dublin gutter, roofing and cleaning firms, and a builders' merchant's shelf prices, and set them side by side. They disagree, sometimes widely, because they include different things: VAT or not, downpipes or not, fascia or not, scaffolding or not. The table says which.

Across Dublin
Dublin's housing differs sharply by council, and so does the gutter work. 28% of homes in Dublin City were built before 1946, many with cast iron or box gutters. In Fingal it's 4%, and 48% went up between 1991 and 2010, almost all with plastic gutters now 15 to 35 years old (CSO Census 2022, table F2007A). Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown has the most trees and the wettest hills, so the most cleaning.
| Area | Households | Built before 1946 | Built 1991 to 2010 | Terraced | Flats in a block |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dublin City | 225,519 | 28% | 24% | 41% | 29% |
| Fingal | 107,599 | 4% | 48% | 27% | 17% |

FAQ
For a typical Dublin semi-detached house, published guide prices for replacing uPVC gutters and downpipes run from €600 to €1,500 (SA Roofing) and €950 to €1,900 ex VAT (Recommended Roofing). Seamless aluminium runs about double. See the cost of gutters page for every figure.
From about €70 for a 2 or 3-bed house front and back (The Window Cleaning Company), €85 for two sides including VAT (Squeeky Clean), and €140 or more for a 4-bed detached house.
No. Gutters Dublin is an introduction service run by Bartlomiej Standa, trading as Elevate Ireland. We pass your request to one gutter company that covers your part of Dublin. They price the job, do the work and deal with you directly.
All four council areas: Dublin City, Fingal, South Dublin and Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown. Each has its own page with its census and rainfall figures.
Repair if the trouble is one joint, one bracket or one downpipe: published Dublin prices start around €80 (SA Roofing). Replace when the runs sag along their length, joints leak in several places or the plastic has gone brittle. Master Roofing puts the switch at the point where repairs reach about 60% of the cost of a new system.
Once a year for most houses, after the leaves fall. Homes under or near trees can need it twice. Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown and South Dublin have about three times Fingal's tree cover (2017 Dublin Tree Canopy Survey, via the Irish Times).
